On Integrity

It seemed like a harmless joke. It’s something l’d gotten away with every time in the past.

We would argue about details of an event or something random and l’d be so sure I was right I would say, “How much?”, ready to bet on my answer.

Sometimes I was right, sometimes I was wrong but we hardly ever enforced the bet. The “winner” only gloried in their being right for a few minutes and then moved on.

Last Sunday was supposed to be the same. The dispute this time was over what time first service started.

He said 7:15, I said 7:30, he said 7:15 again and without giving it much thought, I said, “How much?”. He gave an amount and I then proceeded to check church’s Instagram page.

First service was 7:15.

I went quiet, waiting for him to gloat and for the moment to pass when I heard, “Transfer the money to him”.

“You say what?! LORD that’s how we play. We were playing Sir”.

Again in my spirit, “Transfer the money to him”.

Then I got schooled on integrity, on my word being my bond, on not being too quick to place a bet, or make a promise, on being careful with my words.

Dearly beloved, that’s how I transferred the money to him.

Full amount, laaro kutu kutu Sunday.

He was shocked when he saw the transfer moments later and was like, “Ahn ahn!! My wife has integrity”

Me that I was hoping he would send it back to me. Till now, as I type this, nothing.
